Few things bring a construction site to a halt faster than a hydraulic cylinder that is leaking. Whether you are operating a CASE excavator, JCB backhoe, ACE motor grader, or any other construction machine, hydraulic cylinder leaks are one of the most common failures our customers contact us about. The good news: most cylinder leaks are repairable if caught early, and the repair cost is a fraction of a full cylinder replacement.
Understanding Hydraulic Cylinder Types on Construction Equipment
Your machine will typically have several hydraulic cylinders:
- Boom cylinder — raises and lowers the boom arm
- Arm/stick cylinder — controls the arm movement
- Bucket cylinder — controls bucket curl and dump
- Blade cylinder (graders/dozers) — raises and angles the blade
- Steering cylinder — controls machine steering
Each cylinder contains seals — rod seals, piston seals, and wipers — that contain hydraulic oil under very high pressure (typically 200–350 bar). When these seals fail, oil leaks out.
Diagnosing the Type of Leak
External Rod Seal Leak (Most Common)
Symptom: Oil weeping or spraying around the chrome rod where it enters the cylinder body. You will see oil dripping from the cylinder end cap area.
Cause: Rod seal worn, rod surface scored or pitted, contaminated oil, or incorrect oil specification.
Action: This is repairable. The rod seal kit can be replaced without replacing the entire cylinder in most cases.
Internal Piston Seal Leak
Symptom: The cylinder drifts down or fails to hold a load. The machine drops its load slowly when the control lever is in neutral. There may be no visible external oil leak.
Cause: Piston seal worn or damaged. Contaminated oil with abrasive particles is often the cause.
Action: Requires cylinder disassembly and piston seal replacement. A seal kit from Adinath Traders for most CASE and JCB cylinders costs ₹1,500–₹8,000 depending on cylinder size — far cheaper than a new cylinder.
End Cap / Port Leak
Symptom: Oil leaking from the port connections at the end of the cylinder or from the end cap threads.
Cause: Loose fittings, damaged O-ring on the port fitting, or cracked end cap.
Action: Tighten fittings first (use a torque wrench — overtightening also causes leaks). Replace O-rings if tightening does not resolve. A cracked end cap requires cylinder replacement.
Step-by-Step Diagnosis Process
- Clean the entire cylinder thoroughly with diesel or degreaser and dry it
- Operate the machine through full cylinder strokes
- Look carefully at: the rod where it exits the end cap, all port fittings, and the cylinder barrel for cracks
- Check if the cylinder drifts under load (internal piston seal test)
- Inspect the rod surface: scoring or pitting means the rod needs re-chroming before new seals will last
When to Repair vs Replace
Repair the cylinder if:
- The cylinder barrel is undamaged (no scoring inside)
- The chrome rod is smooth and undamaged (minor surface rust can be polished)
- The end caps and welds are sound
- The failure is simply worn seals
Replace the cylinder if:
- The barrel bore is scored or corroded internally
- The rod is deeply pitted, bent, or needs re-chroming (cost of re-chroming often exceeds a new cylinder)
- End cap or weld failures
- The cylinder has been repaired multiple times already
Hydraulic Cylinder Seal Kits at Adinath Traders
We stock genuine OEM seal kits for CASE, JCB, ACE, and New Holland hydraulic cylinders. Our seal kits include:
- Rod seal (primary and secondary)
- Wiper/dust seal
- Piston seal
- Port O-rings and backup rings
- All seals are manufactured to OEM specifications — no substitute rubber compounds
To order the correct seal kit, have ready: your machine model, serial number, and the cylinder identification number (stamped on the cylinder end cap). Call our parts team on +91 82220 99180 and we will identify the correct kit immediately.
Preventing Future Cylinder Leaks
- Change hydraulic oil on schedule — contaminated oil destroys seals rapidly
- Always replace the hydraulic filter when changing oil
- Avoid operating cylinders at full extension as the default parked position — this exposes the rod to weather and corrosion
- Park with boom down where possible to protect rod seals
- Check hose connections regularly — loose connections allow air ingestion which causes accelerated seal wear
A hydraulic cylinder problem diagnosed early costs a fraction of one left to worsen. Contact Adinath Traders for genuine seal kits and hydraulic cylinder replacement parts — we serve contractors across Haryana, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Delhi-NCR.
